Most people living in New Zealand will be familiar with these elegant little terns that frequent our coastlines and harbours. I call them the black-beret birds for obvious reasons. They are excellent fish catchers, diving for their small fish prey which they then carry back to their young. Adult males also carry fish back to their potential mates as a courtship gift. They are so beautiful and always a pleasure to see. These pictures were taken at Waipu Wildlife Refuge.
