Dolphins in the Falkland Islands

The seas around the Falkland Islands are also rich with life and are visited by several species of dolphins – most commonly Peale’s dolphins and Commerson’s dolphins. Its not difficult to see both species, as they hang out close to shore – the Commerson’s playing in the waves and the Peale’s often around kelp beds. The clear turquoise waters make them easy to photograph especially from up on the cliff tops. The Commerson’s dolphins reach a mature length of only 1.5m (pretty small) and the Peale’s dolphins are bigger at 2.1m. Both species are known to be playful and will interact with boats. It’s a shame the water was a little too cold to attempt a potential dolphin-human interaction otherwise I would have been in there.
