Cheeky wekas

Weka birds are well known to people living in New Zealand. If you camp anywhere they’re around, you’ll soon discover their gregarious personalities and penchant for stealing things – I once witnessed one taking off with someone’s passport! Often mistaken by tourists as kiwis they are not related and have very different behaviour. The weka in these images was one of several I saw in the Cobb Valley sitting on top of coprosma bushes eating the berries while I kept a close eye on my gear.
