White herons are not unique to New Zealand but we have a small, stable population near Okarito Lagoon on the West Coast of the South Island where they nest. In the non breeding season they can be found at estuaries, wetlands and waterways in other parts of the country. Graceful and beautiful, especially when they display their spectacular breeding plumage, they are a delight to view. These images were recently taken in the Karamea area.
