Seals and sea lions

Seals and sea lions are increasingly abundant along the New Zealand coastline. Their large dark eyes and chubby stature are understandably a drawcard for humans, rating high on the cuteness scale. Underwater they are lithe and graceful and can turn into speedy torpedoes. It was such a pleasure to spend some time with them recently on the Otago coastline. While I kept my distance (20m+, still, silent and hidden where possible), it was sad to see several people not observing the rules and coming right up to them, lying within touching distance of them, and surrounding them, all for the sake of a selfie – no concern for the welfare of the animal whatsoever. The risk of a bite and some seriously stinky breath no deterrent. If you’re lucky enough to encounter them, please observe from a respectful distance and encourage others to do likewise.
