White faced herons

White faced herons are native to New Zealand but not endemic. Find any wet area and you probably won’t have to look too far to find them stalking prey and then stabbing at it with their rapier-like beaks. To most people they look a little drab and grey, but at a closer glance they’re stunning, especially when their feathers are ruffled up. Spend a bit of time watching what they do next time you see one.
